Chapter 17

Cat

Just a few minutes after Stefan leaves my room, Willow barges in looking a little breathless. She presses her hand to her bustling chest and stops to take a breath before she tells me what she came for. I watch as her red cheeks revert to their usual, sun-kissed hue and her green eyes assure me that she didn’t come to just wish me a good morning, or good day at this point.

“Taarus needs to speak to you,” she says in one breathless go.

“OK,” I lift my eyebrow at her in wonder. “But, I don’t see the urgency.”

“You have fifteen minutes to get there, that’s all I can say,” she shrugs her shoulders.

I see she’s not wearing her usual white robes with an apron. Today, she’s in a lovely lavender colored dress, and her grey hair is braided in the back.

“OK, I’ll go immediately,” I nod, rubbing my eyes with the tips of my fingers, incredulous at the way this day has started, and it’s just noon.

I’m just wondering what else is awaiting me.

“When I’m done there, I’d like to come and help you in the kitchen,” I smile. “Taarus said I can’t go mushroom picking anyway, so I might as well make myself useful to you.”

“I do appreciate the offer, kid,” her eyes light up at me in such a way that I want to wrap my arms around her, “but, I doubt you’ll be done with Taarus so quickly.”

“Done?” I frown. “What do you mean? What does he want with me?”

“I honestly can’t tell you,” she says, closing up a pretend zipper across her full lips. “But, in all seriousness, you need to get there right now.”

“Alright, alright,” I lift my hands in mock surrender, then quickly change, and I’m already being pushed out of my room and down the corridor towards Taarus’ study.

“There,” she finally says, still by my side. “Just remember to relax, OK? We’ve all done it.”

“Done what?” I’m feeling increasingly suspicious by now, even more so because she obviously won’t tell me a thing. “What the heck is going on here, Willow?”

“Gotta go, kid,” she leans over and presses her lips to my cheek, then disappears down the hallway.

I sigh before lifting my hand to knock on Taarus’ door, and the moment I do so, I hear his voice from inside inviting me in. I do as I am instructed and the moment I push the door open, I see he’s also not wearing his usual robe. This one is more complex, with a silver belt that hangs to the side and a cape which is embroidered with golden threads. He looks like a wizard from the olden days, the likes of which don’t even exist anymore... or so I thought.

“Ah, Ecaterina,” he smiles upon seeing me, and his beard reveals the thinness of his lips as well as the perfect alignment of his teeth. “Thank you for coming.”

“Well, I wasn’t left with much choice,” I smile back.

“Indeed,” he seems amused by the whole thing, whatever it is.
